To Know

One should be thankful for what one has,
And not wish for other things
that might only
make one unhappy

Golden Windows

A little girl lived in a small house on one side of a valley.
Every morning she looked across the valley to a house on the other side.
This house had windows which looked like pure gold.
She wished she could live in such a house,
Because it looked so much bigger and more beautiful than her own.
One day she decided to go to this beautiful house.
She said goodbye to her mother and set off.
It was a long walk and she was tired when she came to the other house late that afternoon.
As she came close, she was sad to see that the windows were made of glass just like those of her own home.
She knew she had to go home before it grew dark,
But first she sat down to rest.
She looked across the valley to her own house and,
To her surprise,
Its windows now looked like gold!
She could not understand this and could only sit and stare in wonder at her own beautiful house.
Just then an old man came by and asked the girl what she was looking at.
When the girl told him,
He laughed and said it was only the sunlight that made the windows look like that.
In the morning,
The rays of the sun lit up the windows of the other house and made them look like gold.
Late in the afternoon,
The setting sun did the same to the windows of her house.
She could not see it because she had never looked at the windows of her own house from across the valley
….

Then the girl knew that one should be thankful for what one has,
And not wish for other things that might only make one unhappy.
